Holiday. 8, Edlingham, Northumberland

On the way back from Cragside, we spotted a sign to Edlington  Edlingham Castle. It's off the beaten track, so it's free of charge, without attendants, amenities, and gets few visitors.

We visited first the small, still functioning, church.

Edlington Edlingham Castle was a fortified manor house, which was pulverised in the Civil War. The ruins are forlorn.

In the centre is a carving of a gargoyle.

The remains of another carving.

Lovely stonework.

I love all the stonework. It's such a shame that it's in ruins though. :(

Imagine if it was still how it was at the time of the Civil War. It must have been beautiful.
