Holiday. 8, Edlingham, Northumberland

On the way back from Cragside, we spotted a sign to Edlington  Edlingham Castle. It's off the beaten track, so it's free of charge, without attendants, amenities, and gets few visitors. 

 

We visited first the small, still functioning, church. 




  


 

 

 

Edlington Edlingham Castle was a fortified manor house, which was pulverised in the Civil War. The ruins are forlorn.

 

 

 

 

In the centre is a carving of a gargoyle.

Ooooooh! I think this may be my favourite set of karen9 holiday snaps to date! These pictures are absolutely stunning! :-) It's funny how places like Edlington Castle still manage to retain a kind of majestic beauty even after being smashed into ruins. As you say, the stonework is lovely. I love the second last picture with that shot looking up. Same goes for the pictures of the gargoyle.

BTW thanks for including that photo of a stained glass window! It's beautiful! :-)

Whoops! I made a mistake: not Edlington, but Edlingham.

I think we spent the most time in these ruins. Despite being ruined,isolated and forlorn, it has appeal and dignity still.

I'm glad you liked the stained glass window.
