On the way back from Cragside, we spotted a sign to Edlington Edlingham Castle. It's off the beaten track, so it's free of charge, without attendants, amenities, and gets few visitors.
We visited first the small, still functioning, church.

Edlington Edlingham Castle was a fortified manor house, which was pulverised in the Civil War. The ruins are forlorn.
In the centre is a carving of a gargoyle.
The remains of another carving.
Lovely stonework.

Date: 2010-09-13 07:30 am (UTC)I think we spent the most time in these ruins. Despite being ruined, isolated and forlorn, it has appeal and dignity still.
I'm glad you liked the stained glass window.
