Lorna Doone

I bought a DVD copy of the 1990 TV series of Lorna Doone with Sean Bean as the villain, Carver Doone, and Clive Owen as the hero, John Ridd. It's beautifully done, though it does leave out a couple of parts, e.g. John Ridd's marginal involvement with the Monmouth Rebellion. Both Clive Owen and Sean Bean are good. As it's 17th Century, all the men have long hair. Yay!

Sean Bean as Carver Doone.

Clive Owen as John Ridd

Oh, I didn't realize there was a 1990 version! I saw the more recent version from about 1999 or 2000, I think -- mostly because Robert Addie had a very small cameo as the King. I even ended up reading the novel before watching the movie, though I have to admit that my memory of it is pretty sketchy now.

I didn't know about this version until I saw it on a Sean Bean site.

I've seen one of the later versions, in which the actor plays John Ridd as a far more cheerful character than does Clive Ownen.

Carver Doone is one of the first Sean Bean characters I saw where my thought process went something like 'He's the bad guy! But he's so attractive, and I feel kinda sympathetic and who cares about the hero anyway, yay Sean Bean!'

Yep. Man, he's gorgeous in that.

Yes, he is gorgeous in this. I love the long hair, the earrings, and the clothes. I also feel a bit sympathetic, and he's more interesting than the hero.

Ooh, this looks very good, why did I not know about it?!

Well, it's a relatively unknown British series. The DVD has been recently released.
