I found an interesting lecture on YouTube on the two Andrew Morays who fought in the Scottish Wars of Independence. The first was overshadowed by William Wallace, the second fought during the second War of Independence, which was overshadowed by the first. I knew of them both through my reading, but far less of the second Andrew Moray. Edward Balliol was a competing king for a time with the young Kind David II, Bruce's son. This is a period that the Scots tend not to acknowledge.

I'm currently reading a novel by Jack Whyte on the young Robert the Bruce. This is the second in a trilogy; the first being on William Wallace and the third intended to be on James Douglas, "The Black Douglas." This is the third such trilogy that's been written recently, though the other two focus on Bruce. Robert Low and Robyn Young are the other two authors. The inspiration I guess for all of them was the Scottish Referendum and the anniversary of Bannockburn. Of the three authors, I find Whyte the best to read.

It's great that you were able to find such an interesting lecture on YouTube! I know I've heard the name of at least one of the two Andrew Morays before, but I'm not sure which one. In any case, I'm glad you had the opportunity to learn more about the second Andrew Moray and his particular period of Scottish history.

I'm always happy to find an author I enjoy. I'm glad you've found that with Jack Whyte. It's wonderful that all three of these authors are teaching people more about Scottish history through their books.

It's kind of you to comment, [livejournal.com profile] rusty_armour I don't know why I like Scottish history so much; I only have a distant connection to Scotland on my one grandmother's side.

That sounds awesome. Are the books fiction or non fiction. Sorry, probably a stupid question :-/ I love Scottish history too. My maiden name is McRae so I've always been interested in it. The McRae's came to NZ in 1872, 100 years before I was born :-D

These books are fiction - it's not a stupid question! I also read non-fiction, the most recent book being Neil Oliver's A History of Scotland, based on his television documentary, which is on YouTube if you're interested. I'm always on the lookout for new authors if you have any suggestions.

Scottish Highland ancestry is romantic, isn't it? My one grandmother's family came from Scotland; their name was Young - Border reivers!
