Summer Solstice
Jun. 20th, 2010 01:28 pm21 June is the Summer Solstice in the Northern Hemisphere. It is known as Midsummer. Midsummer's Day is the 24 June. In some European cultures Midsummer's Eve is still an important festival. In pagan times bonfires were lit as protection against evil spirits, which were believed to roam freely when the sun was turning southwards again. Midsummer plants were believed to have miraculous healing powers and were therefore picked on this night.
